Volvo V70

The Volvo V70 is a mid-size five-door station wagon / estate manufactured by Volvo Cars since 1996 — and closely related to the S70, S60 and S80 saloons as well as the more stylized four-wheel drive Cross Country (XC) and XC70.
Since it’s inception, the V70 has evolved through three generations — notably, the second generation designed by Peter Horbury.
Over 80% of V70s are sold in Europe, one third in Sweden. The Volvo V70 has been the best selling car in Sweden for many years.[citation needed]

The original V70 was a development of the Volvo 850 station wagon and sedan series. The new name reflected Volvo’s new strategy of naming vehicles depending on size and body style. Thus, the 850 was deemed to be a relative size 70. The name is then appended with the type of vehicle. So the station wagon adopted V (for Versatility), S (for Saloon) and C (for the new Coupé); these cars are respectively known as V70, S70 and C70. There were 1,800 improved and new parts in the design from the original 850, including upgraded passive and active safety, better handling and new engines. Gone were the 850’s square edges and replaced by rounded corners to suit the late 90s style trend. Other changes included a new ‘family face’ for the V/S/C70 models, colour coded bumpers, clear indicator lenses, and a new dashboard fascia and materials. However on the whole, one could say the car was similar to its predecessor, but nevertheless, a successful facelift.
Volvo’s variant badging of their cars in this period is synonymous as being complex due to the vast array of models and equipment packages on offer. This policy was adopted as Volvos were seen to be a car that would suit a wide spectrum of the public, thus a vast choice of models and packages were available to suit the most specific customer. In its most basic form, the model line up consisted of Torslanda — named after its’ assembly plant, Torslandaverken — SE and CD. A number of ‘packs’ were available to personalise the car to the customer’s tastes, these being:
Option packs to further personalize the customer’s car included:
This policy of a vast array of option packs thus made it impossible to find two cars being the same.
T5 and R models are high-performance models. The T5 was equipped with a 2.3 turbocharged engine, spoiler and ‘turbine’ alloy wheels, whereas the GLT models had either a 2.3 turbocharged or a 2.4 turbocharged engine. The R was fitted with a full factory fitted body kit (chin spoiler and rear spoiler, anthracite alloy wheels) a range of unique colours.
In the end of 1999 (2001 for North America), Volvo released the all-new V70 based on the new P2 platform which itself was first used for the entirely Swedish-designed Volvo S80 sedan in 1997. This new car dispensed with the boxy shape of Volvos before it to take on a curvy profile much like the S40/S60 series, and added a new aggressive front end. Where the first generation V70 had a saloon variant (S70), the second generation lost the S70 as the new S80 was now seen to be the ‘S70 for the new millennium’. The second generation of the V70 will finish production for model year 2007.
The V70 shares the same sheet metal ahead of the B-pillar with the Volvo S60, although the grilles are different and the front bumpers are mildly different. The dashboard and the majority of the interior of both cars are the same.
As was the case with all P2 platform Volvos, a minor refresh of the V70 occurred across all markets for the 2005 model year, which brought minor styling changes to the front facia, tail lamps, along with several improvements and changes to the interior fittings.
Volvo continues to market the V70 second generation in Europe and Scandanavia, under the name V70 Classic.
The third V70 was officially unveiled by Volvo on 2 February 2007. The car was developed to be a slightly more up-market car than the previous model, but remains the same size. Despite this, rear-seat legroom is increased two centimetres and a revised tailgate design increases the load area volume by 55 L. The tailgate now has motorized lift and closing action. The interior is one of the most luxurious in its class.
As with the second-generation V70, the new car is a unique design sharing little externally with other Volvo models. The Volvo P24 platform is used and much of the interior (other than the rear seats and loadbay) are shared with the second generation S80. The new V70 will have a 3.2 L I6, a 3.0 L turbo straight-six, a light-pressure turbo 2.5 L I5, and two 2.4 L I5 diesel engines. Only the last two are offered with manual gearboxes. In Europe, all models execpt for the 3.2 L version are available with manual gearboxes.
The V70 is available as front or all-wheel drive (AWD) with manual, automatic or Geartronic, semi-automatic gearboxes. As before, there is an AWD only variant with raised suspension, plastic body cladding and an interior grab handle. This version was known as V70 XC (Cross Country) for the older cars, but was renamed XC70 for the new models.
Also following on from the previous generation was the use of five-cylinder, 20 valve inline transverse-mounted engines. All but the bottom range 2.4 employ turbochargers with either low or high pressure depending on the model. The most powerful vehicle in the regular range is the T5 (popular with UK police forces). This same engine is used in a variety of Volvo and other vehicles, and the level of power and performance produced is limited strongly by the computer systems. The V70 T5 can be chipped to deliver easily around 280 bhp and up to 315 bhp with custom fine tune. That is one reason why the vehicle is popular as a high speed vehicle with the police forces.[citation needed] The V70R, using the same engine, offers 300 bhp and 400Nm as standard for the demanding driver. The V70R also comes with Volvo’s 4C multi-mode suspension, developed in conjunction with Öhlins, to allow the driver to vary the cars handling depending on driving style and conditions. Furthermore the V70R has AWD and larger Brembo brakes, in order to compete with the (possible) higher demands.
The front seats and the rear bench are of orthopedic design to provide maximum comfort and support for all occupants. The V70 also features a high-end audio system. Dolby Pro Logic systems and sub-woofers are also available as upgrades to the standard audio system.
Options include DVD navigation with map data and remote control, a rear seat DVD entertainment system with two headrest monitors, headlamp washers, integrated child booster seats, an integrated home link remote control garage door opener, rear-door child-safety locks, rear park assist, power-adjustable passenger seats with 3-position memory and lumbar support, heated front seats, an integrated grocery bag holder, a rear view mirror compass, an integrated sunglass holder, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power glass moonroof, 12 volt power outlets, leather seats, rear tinted windows, and a rain sensor.
Anti-submarining seats and overhead-mounted seat belt reminder lights come standard. Other standard features for 2007 include Volvo on call roadside assistance for four years, rear window deactivation, safe approach and home safe lighting, a security system, engine immobilizer with encrypted ignition key, key integrated remote control with central power door locks, an outside temperature gauge, a tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, a trip computer, driver information display, a power-adjustable driver seat with 3-position memory and lumbar support, ergonomically designed seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, flat-folding front passenger seats, aluminum integrated handle bar for front passenger, illuminated vanity mirrors in driver/front passenger sun visors, four reading lamps, cargo security cover, front center armrest, rear seat ventilation outlets on B-pillar, dual-zone electronic climate control, power windows with driver and passenger auto up/down with anti-trap feature, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with illuminated controls, remote audio controls in steering wheel, and much more.
As standard, the vehicle is equipped with driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags. Also featured is the WHIPS whiplash prevention system on the front seats. The S60 (sedan version) scored four stars out of five in the EuroNCAP safety testing, gaining particular praise in the side-impact tests. The V70 scored five stars in the NHTSA safety testing.
Later cars have the option of the BLIS blind-spot sensor system, that can detect vehicles otherwise hidden from view of the driver due to being just off to one side of the car.
As is typical for Volvos, all models feature daytime running lights to improve driver visibility and safety throughout the day. If an XC70 owner desires to have their daytime running lights turned off, they may do so at any authorized Volvo dealership.
The latest revision of the XC70 includes DSTC (standard on all models) - Dynamic Stability and Traction control, that combines the functions otherwise known as Electronic Stability Program and traction control.

Volvo S40

The Volvo S40, V40 and V50 are compact executive cars produced by Volvo Cars. There have been two generations, the first launched in 1995 and the second one in 2004. The latter is listed by Forbes as one of the best luxury cars for young affluent drivers. It is also the most popular car among women in the luxury segment in the US market according to J.D. Power and Associates.
In the summer of 1995 Volvo released the S40 saloon (sedan) and V40 estate (station wagon). They were built in the Netherlands at the NedCar factory, a pre-Ford joint venture between Volvo and Mitsubishi Motors. It was based on a common platform with the Mitsubishi Carisma, but the Japanese version did not sell as well in Europe.
In 2000 the 40 Series went through a facelift (”Phase II”), and a number of technical improvements were simultaneously introduced, such as improved engine management, direct (diesel) fuel injection, extra safety features, larger brake discs, new front suspension and steering, revised rear suspension, larger tires and a slight widening of the track width.
The 40 Series cars were equipped with four-cylinder engines, such as a 1.9 L diesel or 1.6, 1.8, or 2.0-litre fuel-injected gasoline engines, with low (2.0T) and high (T4) pressure turbo variants at the top of the motor range. The 1.9-litre was the only engine available in North America.
In the UK trim levels were base, SE and CD.
The Volvo S40 was the first car to earn four stars in Euro-NCAP.
Introduced in the middle of the 2004 model year, the second generation S40 (known as the 2004.5 Volvo S40) introduced a new design based on the Volvo P1 platform built at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent, Belgium. At the same time, the V40 was replaced by the V50 estate, also based on the P1 platform and built in Ghent. The S40 was nominated for the World Car of the Year award for 2005 and won the Canadian Car of the Year Best New Sport Compact award for 2005. It has also been elected the South African Car of the Year for 2005 by the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists.
The chassis for this car and the majority of its components were developed by Volvo, however similar mechanical components can be found in the Mazda3 and the European Ford Focus. The engine, a 2.5L 5 cylinder (B5254T3, and B5254S respectively for the turbo and naturally aspirated models) is the latest generation of Volvo’s 5 cylinder engines. These inline fives have been continually developed by Volvo since the debut of the engine in the 850, in 1993. The top of the line S40 T5 AWD, as well as the 2.4 and 2.4i, powertrain is still made by Volvo. The transmission is developed with Getrag at Volvo’s Koping Transmission Center in Sweden, and the AWD system bought from Haldex of Sweden.
The S40 T5 (one of the several variants of the S40) features a 2.5 L (2521 cc) five-cylinder fuel injected engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. The valvetrain has four valves per cylinder and is a DOHC design. The engine is transversely mounted at the front of the vehicle and drives the front wheels, as was with the first generation.
In early 2004, Volvo started an ad campaign called The Mystery of Dalarö in which 32 residents of the same Swedish town bought the same car on the same day from the same dealer. The advert was produced in a documentary style by director Spike Jonze.
The S40 was refreshed for 2008, offering refined sportiness and increased premium feel. Further improvements include improved audio systems, increased storage space and new safety features like Emergency Brake Lights which flash rapidly during hard braking to alert traffic behind the car. The new S40 also comes with optional Active Bi-Xenon headlights which point the light beam in the direction of the road as it curves. There is also a camera which can be located on the side mirrors which alerts the drivers of passing vehicles beside the car. The camera is optional on all models except the SE Lux. Volvo will release the 2.0 litre diesel Geartronic on the third week of February except in Ireland where it will be released in the last week of May.
The T5 engine got a performance increase of 9 hp (6.7 kW), giving an output of 227 hp (169 kW). The D5 engine will become available with a manual gearbox offering 400 N·m (300 ft·lbf) of torque and an automatic transmission offering 350 N·m (260 ft·lbf) in the second half of 2007.
The new S40 will be based on the new C2 platform, the C30 is based on the current S40 platform.

Volvo

Volvo V50

The Volvo V50 is the station wagon version of the Volvo S40 compact executive car, produced by Volvo Cars, introduced in 2003 Bologna Motor Show and manufactured at the Volvo Cars plant in Ghent, Belgium.
It is based on the Ford C1 platform, as is the Mazda “3″. Volvo Cars Special Vehicle also produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 hp (179 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Highlights of the V50’s interior design include soft “theatre” lighting of various sections, and a translucent “iced aqua” center stack. In safety, the V50 features “Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture”.
The top-of-the line V50 is the T5 AWD. This model features four-wheel drive and a straight-5 2.5-litre petrol engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. Its valvetrain has four valves per cylinder and is a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing. The engine provides 220 bhp (164 kW) and 320 N·m (236 ft·lbf) of torque. In Europe the 2.4 Liter turbocharged D5 diesel engine which provides 180 bhp (134 kW) and 350 N·m (258 ft·lbf) of torque is also available. The output of that motor was downgraded from the original diesel motor in the XC90 which produces 185 bhp (138 kW) and 400 N·m (295 ft·lbf) of torque.

The next generation V50 will grow in size to be aligned on the side of the next generation S60 as Volvo Car Corp has recently confirmed. Volvo will not reintroduce the S40 after this model generation and the V50 will become the estate variant for the S60, same as the V70 did become the estate for the S80.
For the model year 2008, the V50 along with the S40 has been facelifted with minor modifications:
Due to less income on a PZEV for the manufacturer, Volvo has forbidden sales of the V50 PZEV cars outside California, Florida, Vermont, Connecticut, Arizona, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New York, Oregon, Maine, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Mexico and Washington[].

Volvo

Volvo S60

The Volvo S60 is a compact executive sedan produced by the Swedish automaker Volvo since 2001. An all-new S60 is expected for the 2010 model year.
The S60 marked a clean break for Volvo from the boxy design that many stereotyped the brand with in 1980s and 90s. Its design by Peter Horbury built upon the styling of the S80 and was the most marked departure from traditional Volvo styling since Horbury joined the firm in 1992. Accordingly, Volvo marketed the car as heralding a “Revolvolution.”
It was built upon Volvo’s P2 platform, which was shared with three other Volvo models: the S80, the V70 and the XC90.
The S60 was refreshed in 2005. The exterior was updated with body-colored side moldings and bumpers, as well as new headlamps. The T5 engine received an increase of 10 bhp.
Police specification models came about through Volvo’s extensive work alongside the users of the vehicles and Police Fleet Management departments. As a result the Police specification vehicles have a striking difference from original showroom model. Firstly the suspension was up-rated to deal the demands of Police work; this included fitting the front suspension of the D5 model variant (as the suspension was designed to deal with the heavier diesel engine). Nivomat self-levelling suspension was also fitted to the rear to ensure correct geometry of the vehicle, regardless of the weight carried. On early models, the clutch was also replaced with the stronger D5 unit.
A larger specification battery and 110A alternator was also fitted to run all the extra equipment, along with a dedicated Police fuse box in the boot. Extra wiring looms are also fitted specially for the Police radios and other equipment, including CCTV cameras. Additional electrical noise suppression has been added so as not to interfere with the sensitive electronics the police use.
The speedometers in the vehicles are calibrated from the factory and do not require recalibration unless the wheel and overall rolling diameters are changed.
305 mm (12.0 in) vented front disc brakes were also fitted alongside special brake pads (and wear indicators) specially designed to cope with high-speed pursuits.
From 2001 - 2004 the 2.3 T5 engine was used and 2004 onwards the 2.4 T5 engine is used. Also beyond common speculation and myths, the engines are NOT chipped or modified specially for police use, they are complete factory spec but in ‘exceptional cases’ the speed limiter (155mph) may have been removed.
First introduced in 2003, Volvo’s S60 R boasted AWD (Haldex) mated to a 300 hp / 295 lb·ft (400 N·m) engine. 2004-2005 models came with a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a 5-speed automatic which allowed only 258 lb. torque. 2006-2007 models were available with a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The 2006-2007 Automatic Transmission allowed for the full torque of 295lbs. (however, this torque was still limited to 258 lbs. in 1st and 2nd gear) Other aspects which drew the R apart from standard S60’s were the four piston brakes (BREMBO) front and rear, optional 18″ 5 spoke “Pegasus” wheels, blue faced “R” gauges, standard HID headlights, as well as the 4C suspension system. (4C stands for “continuously controlled chassis concept”) The 4C feature allowed the user to select from three modes; Comfort, Sport, and Advanced. This tightened the suspension progressively, and also made for enhanced throttle response when in “Advanced” mode. This is easily accomplished due to the fact the throttle is drive by wire, meaning the throttle is connected to the accelerator pedal via electronics instead of a traditional cable design. This allows for different throttle maps to be in place, which can be electronically altered to give a different feel when the accelerator is depressed. The S60 R continues the tradition of “R” cars for Volvo beginning in 1995 with the introduction of the 850 T-5 R.
In 2006, At Speed Motorsports entered an all-wheel-drive S60R in five races of the Speed World Challenge GT class. It was driven by Michael Galati and finished 14th in the overall standings, winning one race (at Mosport). The S60 is the car of the factory Volvo team in the Swedish Touring Car Championship, where it has finished 2nd in the drivers’ championship twice and won the manufacturers’ title once.
The second generation S60 is scheduled to arrive to show rooms some time during 2009. According to Volvo’s senior vice-president & design director, Steve Mattin, the all new S60 is expected in late 2009. This new sedan will show off Volvo’s completely new design language already seen in the Volvo XC60 concept. This new sedan will ride on the same platform as the XC60 and expect to see the next generation V50 become the estate variant for this new sedan. The new Volvo S60, V50, and XC60 will all ride on the Volvo P24 platform. Volvo has confirmed that the new S60 will become the true new rival for the Mercedes C-class, Audi A4 and the BMW 3-series, as Volvo is undergoing new product alignment. The S60 will shrink in size to fit this role more precisely and avoid any confusion with the S80. New features would include the new large Volvo iron symbol, parallel to the grille day running lamps, and larger spaced letters in the brand name on rear. The last of the first generation S60 is set to roll of the factory line in Ghent in December 2008.
In early 2008 the new Volvo S60 was sighted on Volvo’s test facility and also sighted parked at Volvo Torslanda Plant. The new entry level luxury sedan is expected to carry over the radical new look of Volvo that was warmly received by the public with the new Volvo XC60. The S60 is also reported to have the V50 as its new estate version, as the S40 is speculated to end production at the end of the current product cycle in 2009.

Volvo

Volvo S80

The Volvo S80 is a large car produced by Volvo since 1998 as the replacement for the rear-wheel drive Volvo 960/S90 sedan. The engine of every S80 has been built at the Torslanda Plant (Torslandaverken) in Gothenburg, Sweden. Unlike almost all other Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation. Now, the third generation V70 wagon is marketed as the estate version for the second generation S80 sedan.
Upon its debut it was notable for being one of the first Volvos to depart from the company’s boxy styling idiom that dated to the inception of the Volvo 140 Series. The S80’s styling, with its pronounced beltline and tail light configuration has been adopted throughout the Volvo line.
The first generation Volvo S80 had one of the world’s highest crash test ratings in the world for over 5 years.[citation needed] The second generation Volvo S80 in June of 2007 scored the highest “good” rating in the IIHS crash test performance for frontal impacts .
The first generation S80 is based on the Volvo P2 platform. More than 368,000 first generation S80s were built before the introduction of the new model.
This S80 sedan being Volvo’s flagship model was heavily equipped with numerous safety systems to ensure all occupants safety, including SIPS and WHIPS.
The S80 also boasts three firsts for passenger cars. The first was the use of a built-in, fully integrated GSM phone, complete with both a hands free function and a lift-up hand-set. The second was the fitment of the straight six engine in a transverse mounting. Volvo claims to be the first manufacturer to succeed in mass producing this configuration. No existing manual gearbox would fit in the engine bay with the six cylinder engine, so Volvo had to develop their own, claimed to be the world’s smallest manual gearbox, the M65. The previous record holder was also a Volvo gearbox, the M56 developed to fit the wide 5 cylinder transverse engine first used in the 850 series cars. Thirdly, the S80 was the world’s first car with an environmental specification, covering aspects such as those directly relating to the car such as allergens from textiles and fuel economy and the life cycle of the car from production to dismantling.
For Volvo, the S80 was a major step forward into the age of modern car design, particularly with the use of multiplex wiring.
The S80 was initially available with four different engines. Starting the range was a detuned 2.4-litre 140 hp 5-cylinder. This was also available as a CNG and as an LPG version. The fully tuned version produced 170 PS (125 kW). Next up was a 2.9 L 196 PS (144 kw) 6-cylinder, then 272 PS (200 kW) T6 and finally, the 140 PS (102 kW) 2.5 L TDI (diesel). The 2.9 has a Straight-6 engine while the T6 was powered by a destroked twin-turbocharged version. In 2000 there was the addition of the 200 hp (149 kw) 2.5T, available with standard all-wheel drive. The 2.5T model featured a light-pressure turbocharger. Late 2001 introduced the 163 PS (120 kW) 5 cylinder common rail diesel D5, detuned to 130 PS (96 kW) and sold as 2.4D in some markets.
On January 31, 2006, Volvo unveiled the first pictures of the second generation S80. Generally all features of the car were upgraded substantially. The new S80 will feature a new 3.2 L straight-6 or 4.4 L V8 engine in combination with available four-wheel drive. The second-generation S80 is the first Volvo sedan model to become available with Volvo’s compact, transversely fitted V8 with a power output of 316 PS (232 kw) and 440 N•m of torque. With four catalytic converters and advanced electronics, this engine, which was first introduced in the Volvo XC90, is one of the cleanest V8s on the market. The exterior is similar to that of the first generation but is greatly improved with more high strength boron steel in the body for safety. The interior is seen as one of the most comfortable in the automotive industry.
This second generation S80 is no exception to Volvo’s on going improvements and inventions of safety. The second generation S80 has been given the IIHS 2007 Top Safety Pick Award in overall safety protection. Also again in November the IIHS awarded the 2008 Volvo S80 with Top Safety Award. This S80 performed outstanding above its German and Japanese rivals. Scores were perfect for frontal, side, and rear impacts. The car was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show on February 28, and sales began on June 2006. The new S80 is based on the Volvo P24- platform which was mainly developed by Volvo itself, also used for vehicles including Ford’s S-MAX and Galaxy large MPVs. Even although some of these other Ford vehicles ride on this platform, the majority of the cars’ parts was made by Volvo alone and not found in the Ford.
Volvo’s Personal Car Communicator (PCC) remote control will also be an optional feature with the new S80. This feature is fairly new to the automotive industry. Before a driver gets to their car, they are able to review the security level and know whether they have set the alarm and if the car is locked. Additionally, there is a heartbeat sensor that warns if someone is hiding inside the car.
The all new S80 is the first Volvo model to feature Adaptive cruise control (ACC) with Collision Warning and Brake Support (CWBS). Adaptive cruise control helps ensure comfort and relaxed driving by letting the driver select the desired speed and the minimum time gap to the vehicle in front of them. When a radar sensor detects a slower vehicle in front of them, Adaptive Cruise Control adapts to that vehicle by applying the brakes as necessary. As the Collision Warning System senses an impending collision, it alerts with a flashing light on the windshield and an audible alarm. Meanwhile Brake Support offers additional assistance by preparing the braking system so that the car can begin stopping faster and avoid a potentially dangerous situation before it happens. Volvo S80 is also available with a new safety innovation called Blind Spot Information System (BLIS, first seen in Volvo S40) which senses when a person enters the drivers blind spot and Active Bi-Xenon Lights (ABL) to illuminate around curves in the dark. Volvo is known for making historic strides in the production of intuitive new safety systems. BLIS system has been recently introduced at Mercedes-Benz higher specifications cars, nearly two years after Volvo. The second generation Volvo S80 is much more luxurious than the previous generation, and it flaunts its “Scandinavian Luxury” design language. It competes directly against the Saab 9-5, Lexus GS, BMW 5 Series, Mercedes Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and Acura RL. The second generation S80 has already won awards in best mid size luxury sedan interior.

Volvo C70

The Volvo C70, a two-door manufactured by Volvo Cars, has been available from 1997-2002my as both convertible and coupé, from 2003-2005my as a convertible, and from 2006my as a retractable hardtop.
Volvo introduced the first generation C70 as a 1997 model in Europe, and as a 1998 model in North America — with both low-pressure and high-pressure, 5-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engines and manual and automatic transmissions. Peter Horbury designed the exterior and Mexican designer Jose Diaz de la Vega led the interior design team.
In a development program of 30 months and working with a Volvo 850-derived platform, Britain’s TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing) co-designed the car’s basic design and suspension tuning with Volvo. The two companies later experienced contract disputes and threatened shutdowns of the Uddevalla factory; TWR did not contribute to the second generation C70.
Volvo’s first modern convertible, the C70 was manufactured in Uddevalla, Sweden on a separate assembly line from the 70-series sedan and station wagon. The four-seater convertible featured an electrically-heated glass rear window, automatic (pop-up) rollover hoops, seat belt pre-tensioners, boron steel reinforced A-pillers, front and side airbags, and a safety cage — a horseshoe like structure around the passenger compartment.
The cloth convertible top, initially available in four colors., was fully automatic, operated by a single, dashboard-mounted button. The top stored under a rigid tonneau cover in a system pioneered in the fourth generation Mercedes SL.
The C70 convertible exhibited two negative traits endemic to convertibles: poor rear visibility and pronounced skuttle shake, a characteristic wherby the structural design of the bulkhead between engine and passenger compartment of a convertible suffers sufficiently poor rigidity to negatively impact ride and handling — and to allow noticeable vibration, shudder or chassis-flexing into the passenger compartment.
An early special editions featured two-tone leather interior, SC-901 (1998) Dolby Pro Logic I stereo with 3-disc integrated changer unit (via a cartridge) 500 watts of power and 12 high end Dynaudio speakers.
The C70 was introduced to the press in a signature color (saffron orange metallic) and for the debut marketing, the 1997 movie The Saint featured a C70 — recalling the notable connection of the Volvo P1800 and the TV series from the early 1960s, The Saint with Roger Moore as Simon Templar.
The new C70 model was launched on 13 April 2006, sharing the Volvo P1 platform, designed by John Kinsey and built by Pininfarina Sverige AB. The three-piece retractable hardtop raises or lowers in under 30 seconds and replaces both the convertible and the coupé, the latter which had been absent from Volvo’s lineup since 2003. The C70 will be offered with a normally-aspirated gasoline engine, as well as diesel engines with variable geometry turbocharger and common-rail direct injection.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the United States recently conducted its first crash tests of several convertibles and designated the C70 a “Top Safety Pick”.
Safety systems include a door-mounted side impact protection inflatable which inflates upward when activated. The curtain has an extra stiff construction with double rows of slats that are slightly offset from each other. This allows them to remain upright and offer effective head protection even with the window open. The curtain also deflates slowly to provide protection should the car roll over. This is a unique solution in the automotive world.
The C70 retractable hardtop also features a roll over protection structure (ROPS) with two pyrotechnically charged roll hoops hidden behind the rear seats that deploy under roll-over conditions whether the roof is retracted or not.

Volvo XC90

The Volvo XC90 is a mid-size crossover produced by Volvo Cars since it was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show 2002. It is based on the P2 platform, shared with the Volvo S80 and other large Volvo cars. As Volvo’s top-selling vehicle in the United States The XC90 is also Volvo’s best selling model worldwide with 85,994 cars sold in 2005.
A new Ford/Yamaha V8 engine was added in 2005. This 4.4 L Ford V8 engine produces 311 hp (232 kW) and 325 ft·lbf (441 Nm) of torque. The XC90 V8 will be priced at just over US$45,000 and it is expected that more than 15,000 would be sold per year.
The XC90 won the North American Car of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine’s Sport/Utility of the Year for 2003.
The XC90 was updated for 2007 with a restyled front and rear and a revised interior. The 235 hp 3.2 L SI6 straight-6 engine replaced the 208 hp B524T2 straight-5 in the base model for the US market. The 2007 XC90 debuted in April 2006 at the New York Auto Show.
The XC90 is produced at Volvo’s Torslanda Plant (Torslandaverken) in Sweden.
The Volvo XC90 SUV is one of the world’s best safety performing luxury SUVs. The Volvo XC90 has been used as bench mark when it comes to safety features such as the front, side, and rear impact crash tests.[citation needed] The XC90 is also known for the world’s best performance in the SUV roll over test, as many other premium brands neglect to test this feature on their models. The Volvo XC90 front end is specifically designed to absorb frontal impacts and also deflect any pedestrians up on to the hood of the vehicle rather than underneath the bonnet. Volvo has patented the unique frontal structure that has renowned crumple zones, and a pre-determined positions for the engine and other ancillaries during a frontal impact.
The XC90’s roof is reinforced with ultra high strength steel to help prevent a collapse in the passenger cavity in the event of a roll over. This Volvo system is called ROPS, and is closely associated with the RSC, DSTC, and SIPS systems of Volvo to prevent and ultimately minimize effects of a pending accident.
This Volvo SUV has been designed on the rear end to absorb impact energy, but the occupants are also protected by one of the world’s most advanced whiplash protection systems. This Volvo WHIPS system cradles the entire body of the occupants when jolted in a rear end collision.
The XC90 has scored the highest rating of “Good” in the IIHS crash test; notably the rear impact, side impact, and roll over; for numerous years since its debut and most recently on July 3, 2007.
At the end of July 2007, Volvo Car Corp. announced the recall of 42,211 2005 year XC90’s in order to check their batteries to avoid the risk of an internal short circuit and fire. The vehicles were manufactured in the Swedish Torslandaverken between June 7, 2004 and May 13, 2005. The recall only applies to cars in the U.S. and Canada. There have been no reports of short circuiting in the vehicles.
The updated XC90 that was scheduled for 2010 introduction, has been canceled. Instead, the current model will undergo a facelift that will keep it on the market until 2012. Volvo has stated that the second generation XC90 is not cancelled altogether, as rumored, but its introduction could be delayed.

Volvo C30

The Volvo C30 is a compact car produced by the Volvo division of Ford Motor Company. The C30 is a three-door, four-seat hatchback powered by straight-4 and straight-5 engines. Despite the name, the car is the hatchback / coupe version of the S40/V50/C70 range and therefore uses the same Ford C1 platform as the Ford Focus and Mazda3.
The production car was officially unveiled at the 2006 Paris Motor Show. In mid-2006, the C30 was approved for production launch in late 2006 in Europe. The C30 went on sale in Canada in March 2007 as a 2007 model, and in October 2007 in the United States as a 2008 model, with the T5 as the single version. It is being marketed as a premium hatchback specially designed for first-time Volvo buyers and the youth market. Production is expected to be 65,000 units a year, 75% for sale in the European market.
Notably, the design of the C30 recalls another important Volvo, the 1800ES, the estate adaptation of the P1800 Coupe. According to Simon Lamarre, chief studio designer, “the 1800ES has become one of the icons for Volvo,” inspiring the design of the Volvo C30.
The C30 is offered with a wide variety of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol engines include a 100 hp 1.6 litre I4, a 125 hp 1.8 litre I4, a 145 hp 2.0 litre I4, a 170 hp 2.4 liter inline-5, and a 227 hp turbocharged 2.5 litre inline-5. Diesel engines will be a 109 hp 1.6 litre inline-4, a 136 hp 2.0 litre inline-4, and a 180 hp 2.4 litre inline-5. All models will be fitted with a manual gearbox, and the inline-5 petrol versions will have automatic transmissions as an option. Speculation suggesting that a 1.4 litre inline-4 petrol engine from the Ford Focus would be offered proved false and the smallest engine in the range will is the 1.6 litre engines.
An upgraded sound system includes a digital 5×130 watt ICE Power amplifier from Alpine featuring Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, and 10 loudspeakers from Danish Dynaudio, appealing to the youth market.
Three modified C30s were shown at the 2006 SEMA event: Evolve’s C30, IPD’s C30 and a Heico Sportiv/Burton Snowboard C30.
The 2008 model year brings some minor changes, mostly adapting the interior to the facelifted S40/V50 and including as standard an Aux audio socket. Only the T5 2.5 litre turbocharged gasoline engine is available in the United States, for both manual and automatic transmissions.
Volvo is developing a plug-in hybrid electric version of the C30 at their California development centre. A concept of the C30 hybrid called the ReCharge was shown in September 2007 at the Frankfurt auto show. The hybrid C30 will be a flex-fuel or diesel-electric hybrid with a powertrain design similar to General Motors’ E-Flex platform and its Chevrolet Volt concept vehicle. That is, it will use a series-hybrid design in which the vehicle is driven directly by electric motors powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. A small internal combustion engine will have no direct connection to the drivetrain, but will function only as a backup generator when necessary to recharge the batteries. The C30 hybrid will have a range of approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi) on battery power alone, and will recharge from a standard home electrical outlet in about three hours.
The C30 continues Volvo’s marketing strategy to put safety as a primary concern.[citation needed] This is demonstrated[original research?] through some recently developed safety features, including a method of overcoming the “blind spots” or “dead areas” in the driver’s view to the rear through a system solely introduced by Volvo, known as BLIS (Blind Spot Information System).
The C30 also features a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability program (ESP), traction control and airbags all around for side impact and rollover protection, front and rear crumple zones, and a stiff occupant cell.
The Volvo C30 has a patented front and rear structure using four different grades of steel to absorb and redistribute impact energy around the body of the coupe. Volvo’s Whiplash Protection System and Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and Inflatable Curtain are also standard. The seat belts have pretensioners to protect the occupants against unexpected accidents.
The car also uses Volvo’s Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS) which continuously monitors the car’s preemptive systems such as steering wheel angle, pedal depressions, and overall factors that help the vehicle’s computer to decide if the driver is busy or distracted merging or turning, and will then accordingly delay certain data or alerts that are unimportant.
The C30 has been criticized because in an effort to make it more responsive in curves it has become unreliable on ice or snow where the rear end can easily lose its grip.
